VETO SF603!

We urge Governor Reynolds to veto this bill!

It is unbelievable that a group of legislators has forced legislation through the Iowa House and Senate in approximately 24 hours which will have a dramatic and not yet fully understood effect in every corner of the state and says to every would-be tradesperson out there that adequate training is not important. The amendment to Senate File 603 which was passed in the Iowa Senate today takes away the ability for cities, counties, school districts and other public entities to consider whether developers, including developers seeking millions of dollars in tax incentives, will utilize contractors and subcontractors with training programs and properly trained employees to work on projects subsidized by taxpayers.

Further, it puts millions of dollars of grants at risk and threatens to dismantle some of the work-based learning programming that Governor Reynolds and a bipartisan group of legislators has prioritized as good workforce development policy. Union and non-union contractors, along with schools and community colleges, operate registered apprenticeship programs across Iowa. Registered apprenticeship is the model that is used to train tradespeople; it has been for hundreds of years. We must ask again: What is so wrong with requiring would-be developers who are asking for millions of dollars in incentives to make commitments to safety and workplace training when it comes to the projects they want subsidized by the public? Some legislators would ask that we hand over our tax dollars without any questions simply because they assume that union workers might gain an edge if training and qualifications are allowed to be considered. This certainly is no reason to send our communities in a race to the bottom when we are facing a severe workforce crisis.

Please call the Governor and ask her to veto this bill (SF603)!

Apprenticeship Training

Iron Workers Local 67 takes pride in its rich history of building.

We build the skylines of central Iowa, the places where you live, work and shop. We reinforce the concrete in our roadways, floors and walls. That level of skill isn’t achieved over night. It happens with hard work and dedication to be the best in our business.

Iron Workers Local 67 Training Center

These skills are taught at our state-of-the-art training center. This is where we teach the young men and women of central Iowa all the skills to be the best, safest and most skilled in our craft. We train our students on OSHA, where they will receive an OSHA 30 certificate. We train them to be certified riggers, and signalers, and we certify our members in multiple welding processes in house. We are an AWS accredited training facility, which means we can certify our members in house with nationally recognized welding certifications.

In our training facility we train our members the hands-on techniques they need to be effective on the job. In our shop class we train them how to tie the various types of rebar ties and which ties to utilize for walls, beams, and mats. We have a hands-on rigging course where we calculate the weight of the pieces to be lifted, inspect the rigging, select the appropriate rigging for the lifts, and lift them safely.

Iron Workers/AWS National Welding Certification Program

The Iron Workers/AWS National Welding Certification Program is a highly respected and nationally recognized program. The program is a partnership with the American Welding Society and provides an unparalleled standard of excellence for welder training, qualification and certification. The benefits for Iron Workers Local 67 members, signatory employers and owners are significant. The certifications provide portability; the ownership is with the ironworker welder and allows him/her to weld from the Atlantic to the Pacific, eliminating the need for requalification, saving time and providing a huge cost savings.

With economic growth, the rebuilding of North America's infrastructure and the amount of power plants being built and refurbished, the IW is training and testing members to meet the demands of the industry and is committed to providing the skilled union ironworker welders needed to get the job done right the first time.

The Iron Workers welding certification program database operates as an online, web-based system and offers a fast, efficient method for the transfer of information, shortening the waiting period needed for Iron Workers members to get certification cards in hand and access the jobsite. The system also offers Iron Workers employers a quick check method for verification of qualifications/certifications issued through the National Training Fund. We have a team of instructors who are the best in the business. Our instructors our trained annually to maintain and update their credentials at Washetnaw Community College in Ann Arbor, Michigan. We believe in keeping a highly skilled training department to pass on the best and most valuable trainings to the next generations of Iron Workers.
